Burj Al Arab is one of the most famous hotels in the world. Its name means the Arab Tower. The building serves as a five-star hotel. It is situated on the beachfront area close to Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

The hotel is currently the forth tallest hotels in the world. It was designed to look like the sail of dhow which is a popular Arabic sea vessel. It has two wings that open to form a mast with a gigantic atrium encircling the open space inn between. The building was planed to be unique and set itself apart as a distinct landmark.

The hotel is 321 meter tall, has 202 rooms, total floor area of 111,500 square meters and 60 floors. It was constructed on an artificial island 280 meters into the sea from the Jumeirah beach.

The construction of the hotel started in 1994. The chief architect was the British Tom Wright. The project was overseen by the UK based multidisciplinary consultancy Atkins and built by the South-African construction company Murray & Roberts.

The construction started with the creation of the man-made island in the sea. This was done with the help of 230 forty-meter concrete poles that were put into the sea to hold the island in place. Then they laid a base of rocks and enforced the construction from erosion with special concrete designs.

During the next three years the hotel was built. The name was released by the mastermind behind the Dubai economic miracle Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The hotel is operated by the Jumeirah Group. Despite its huge size it has only 202 bedroom suites. They range from 169 to 780 square meters.

The Burj Al Arab is considered by many the world’ most luxurious hotel. Some have given in 7 stars even though such official ranking does not exist yet. It offers unique features, services and views with a helipad, magnificent restaurants and other amenities.
